This is a guide for all those who did not understand the concept of ‘Roast’ and were left second guessing about AIB’s recent video!
It has been one hellova roller coaster ride for Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Karan Johar and the AIB comedians. As we all know, the names mentioned were seen in a video called the AIB Knockout which became a rage post its release. The video has landed itself in a soup, following a controversy over the “vulgar content” it put forth. And the reactions the video received were on two extremes. While some literally went ROFL, there were others who missed the basic point of it all; probably because not many are familiar with the the concept of a Celebrity Roast.
So for all those who were left bewildered, here’s a breakdown of the concept of a Roast…
What is a roast?
If Chicken is the first thing that comes to your mind on hearing ‘Roast’, you’ve drawn a perfect analogy. The only difference being that in case of a comedy roast, it is a person who’s being grilled with some rather offensive humour.
A roast is essentially a mockery of the word ‘Toast.’ When you raise a toast to someone, everyone present in the praises the person and cheers for him, but in case of a roast, everyone mocks the person; of course with his consent. Though the concept is very common in the west, it was introduced in India for the very first time by AIB in their show AIB Knockout.
What kind of jokes do they crack in a roast?
We all have our binge session with friends, two beers in one hand each. All the MC, BC, and C words come flying out of our mouth don’t they? Well a roast is JUST THAT, only on a public platform.
If you expect a roast to be all hunky dory with rainbows and butterflies, you are in for a rather rude shock. A roast is exactly opposite of what they call ‘politically correct.’ It is intentionally offensive, mean and personal. The puns and one liners are mostly aimed at the individual’s personal incidents, physical appearance, profession or reputation. The japes can also be hinted at stereotypes prevailing in our society regarding homosexuality, racism, feminism etc. The key to learn here is, it’s all meant in pure jest and nothing beyond that! It is all below the belt, but that is what is supposed to make it funny.
Does one get an invite to get roasted?
Well it all depends from one celebrity to another. In the west, celebrities like James Franco and Charlie Sheen personally asked to be roasted. In Bollywood, however, Ranveer and Arjun were approached by the AIB comedians, to take part in the roast session. The AIB Knockout video saw the two actors being the butt of some hilarious jokes and the scene was witnessed by leading ladies of B-town like Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha.
Who gets to roast whom?
Every celebrity has a bunch of panelists who get to roast him or her. But the celebrity gets to do the same to them. It is basically a tit for tat scenario where everyone gets to roast one another and the jokes aren’t restricted to the celebrity per say. The AIB Knockout video had AIB comedians like Rohan Joshi, Tanmay Bhatt, Abish Matthew and Gursimran Khamba on the panel. They were joined by Roadies fame Ragu Ram and popular film critique Rajeev Masand as well.
Is it scripted or impromptu?
For the most part, a roast session is purely scripted. Not only is the celebrity aware of the kind of humour which will be directed his way but also is learned about the panelists who will be taking his/her case. A roast does have its impromptu bits in between which make it even more believable. So for those who were disappointed by it being ‘staged,’ well folks it was MEANT to be that way!
Well these were all the main points to know about before you witness anyone’s Roast. In case you still have a doubt or two about.
