The magnum opus event in the world of cricket, ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, commences on February 14. The one and half month long event, with 14 nations participating is co-hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand. The 49-match schedule and fixtures pitch the defending champions, India against their arch rivals Pakistan in their tournament opener, while the inaugural match will be played between Sri Lanka and co-host New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Former Indian great Sachin Tendulkar has been roped in as the ambassador of the tournament for the second time in row. Australia start their campaign against England in the second match of on the opening day at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne. All the participating teams will announce their final 15-man squad before January 10, 2015.

The 49 matches will be played in 14 venues with Australia staging 26 games at grounds in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney while New Zealand hosting 23 games in seven cities, including Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Wellington. The 14 nations have been divided into two groups – Pool A and Pool B. In the Pool A, the teams are England, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Scotland while Pool B features South Africa, India, Pakistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland and United States of Emirates. The group matches are to be scheduled to be played till March 15.

India became the first host nation to win the ICC World Cup in 2011, something Australia and New Zealand would be eyeing this edition. The format is the same as the 2011 edition: 14 teams will take part in the initial stages, divided into two groups of seven; the seven teams play each other once before the top four teams from each group qualify for the quarter-finals. The format ensures that each team gets to play a minimum of six matches even if they exit in the group stage. All teams participating in the tournament will play two matches apiece as practice games but these will be termed as non-ODI games.

Opening Ceremony to take place in Melbourne and Christchurch

Melbourne, Dec 19: Melbourne was Friday named as the host of Australian opening ceremony for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2015. Two opening ceremonies for cricket’s marquee event will be held Feb 12, with co-hosts New Zealand to stage their opener on the same evening in Christchurch.

The Melbourne celebration at Sidney Myer Music Bowl will involve World Cup players and legends, cultural and music performances, a spectacular fireworks display and a yet-to-be-revealed “special moment”. Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events John Eren said Melbourne would now be the scene of the opening event, the first match on Australian soil when Australia play England Feb 14, and the final at the Melbournbe Cricket Ground (MCG) March 29.

“We are delighted that Melburnians and visitors from all over the world will have a chance to attend this once-in-a-generation event at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl,” Eren was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia (CA) website. John Harnden, World Cup 2015 chief executive, said the event would get the tournament off to a “great start”.

The opening ceremony will be free to attend and tickets will be available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Each applicant can request up to four tickets and further details of the ceremony will be revealed closer to the event.

Christchurch’s opening event will feature some of New Zealand’s best known performers, cricket legends including Richard Hadlee and Stephen Fleming and a special segment to recognise the rebuilding of the city following the disastrous earthquakes.

The 11th edition of ICC Cricket World Cup presented its schedule and match fixtures, which commences on February 14 with the match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. ICC Cricket World Cup 2105 that is jointly co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, presents an odd hour gap for the viewers in the Indian subcontinent. Hence, we present the complete time-table of the 49-match tournament in the Indian Standard Time (IST).

The 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, will feature its first match, between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval in Christchurch for Indian viewers on February 15 at 3.30 am IST early morning. The match timings for the matches will follow three timings in India – the morning matches scheduled in Australia and New Zealand at 3.30 am, 6.30 am and the Day-night matches will take place at 9.00 am IST. The defending champions India is scheduled to begin their campaign against Pakistan on February 15 in a day-night clash at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide.

The tournament that will feature 49 matches, which will be played in 14 venues with Australia staging 26 games at grounds in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney while New Zealand hosts 23 games in seven cities, including Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Wellington. 

The once-in-four-year tournament will see fourteen teams divided into two groups – Pool A and Pool B. The teams in Pool A feature – England, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Scotland while Pool B has South Africa, India, Pakistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland and United States of Emirates.

A total of 42 matches will be played throughout the group stage of tournament. The top four teams from each pool will advance to play the quarter-finals. The knock-out stage with four quarter-finals matches will begin from March 18 till March 21. The first semi-final match will take place on March 24 while second semi-final on March 26.

The exciting clash for the 11th ICC Cricket World Cup title, the all-important final will be played on March 29 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

All the participating teams will announce their final 15-man squad before January 10, 2015. The 11th Edition of ICC World Cup 2015 follows the same format as that of the previous edition.
