Brain Computer Interface (BCI)

Brain Computer Interface (BCI)
Brain Computer interface (BCI) is an emerging technology that is growing really fast. It is a technology that provides direct communication and control between the brain and the computer.Human computer interfaces, such as the keyboard and mouse, are now outdated. As BCI technology advances, you will be able to do just about anything by simply thinking about it. For instance, we could turn on lights at home and send email from our smart phones without even touching them. In the future, if you are thirsty your personal rRobot could appear by your side with a glass of water because it knows that you are thirsty. Scientists are trying to build a direct channel between computers and the human brain.BCI works by using electrodes to detect electric signals in the brain which are sent to a computer. The computer then translates these electric signals into data, which is used to control a computer or a device linked to computer.
Research on BCI began in 1970 at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). The first device was trialled in humans in the mids-1990s after many experiments on animals. In 2005, Matthew Nagle was one of the first people to use BCI to restore functionality lost due to paralysis. BCI is a collaboration which accepts and controls mechanical device as a natural part of human body, which is why it is really helpful for those who are paralyzed or blind. It provides communication, environment control and movement restoration to disabled people. You can control wheel chairs, vehicles and assistant robots with BCI. You can also control and play video games on the computer by just thinking.
The brain turns these kinds of thoughts in to physical actions through the neuron pathways. In terms of BCI devices, there are three types: invasive, partially invasive and non-invasive.  Invasive BCIs are implanted directly into the grey matter of the brain by neurosurgery. Partially invasive BCI is another brain signal reading process which is applied to the inside of skull but outside the grey matter. Non-invasive is the most used neuron signal imaging method which is applied to the outside of the skull and just applied on the scalp. With these devices, it is possible to do Google searches through the brain and capture dreams. This technology is truly direct connection - allowing for the brain to have control over devices and software’s without intermediates, relying solely on mental activity to perform different tasks. It will enable us to achieve singularity very soon. In the future we can hope to get many benefits through this progressively advancing and potentially high impact technology.
